Day in the Bay Sunday 9 th February 2025 Day in the Bay is back in 2025 and better than ever! Come along on Sunday 9th of February to kick off the beginning of the Island Bay Festival with the parade, bands, food and the blessing of the boats. Be sure to check out the other events happening throughout the week! Anchor 1 2025 Key Events We are so excited to see you at Day in the Bay! With so many different events for everyone to attend, we have highlighted a few of the key events we know you won't want to miss. Take me to more event details Markets & Food Trucks Come try a delicious array of food from this year's selection of food trucks! Get whatever you may want or need from our fun market stalls - ranging from clothes, to jewelry, to crafts! Community Stalls In Shorland park you'll find some stalls of Island Bay's favorite communities - ranging from Island Bay Community Centre, to Island Bay football club. Festival summer showcase Featuring an array of your favorite south coast creatives at the St Hilda's Anglican church! Locals fun night at the beach! Come join us with your fav local takeaways or bring a picnic, where we will be hosting the Sandcastle competition sponsored by our friends 'HELL' in Island Bay. Prizes for the most technically sound, creative approach & best of the best for the open category 15+ as well as under 5 (with help) 5-10 &10-15. DJs TIGS & Dunc will be providing sounds as we lighten up this beach party. The night will wind up with the 3rd running of the Tangata Manu (Bird Man). Again, prizes for both the open & junior category. This event will have some of your known locals dressing up & attempting to defy gravity. Create a costume & see how far you can fly & touch the sky! Open studio Ian Logan It's getting on for 50 years since Ian Logan first picked up a paint brush and started his artistic journey - starting with some unauthorized additions to his father John Logan's paintings of the bay. So it's appropriate that he's curating a group exhibition of Aotearoa and international artists at his own gallery on High Street which has been in the family since 1950. Expect an eclectic Open Studio style show of established and new talents with a wide range of media. Community Parade Come marvel at the colours and movement of the community, gathering together to showcase a cohesive, on-the-go, collaborative performace making it's way down the streets of Island bay. Music Performances Whether you want to sit with your family, eating stall food, while watching your bands of choice, or you want to get up and dance all your stresses away - there's no denying that this year's music performances will get you hooked! Tapu Te Ranga Marae - Whanau fun day Tū Mātau Ora is founded on mātauranga Māori informing positive outcomes for people, communities, and our environments. Tū Mātau Ora shares taonga tākaro, traditional Māori games as a fun, safe way to engage, educate and empower. Tū Mātau Ora believes that play is for everyone and provides a range of kēmu (games) that are suitable for all ages and abilities! 2024 award winners of Wellington Airport Regional Community ‘Rising Star’ and the Āti Awa Toa ‘Community Impacts’ Award. Naumai, haere mai! Join Tū Matau Ora at the Island Bay festival for interactive fun and experience the magic of Taonga Tākaro. Rēheko! Blessing of the Boats View the Blessing of the Boats at the shore-front, a ceremony of transition and mana where boats are welcomed onto the waters of Island Bay Beach, and blessed for safe carriage and bountiful catches. Unique to Island Bay, the Blessing of the Boats ceremony has been adopted in Island Bay by its Italian community since 1933. Morsa Loca After-Party – Island Bay Festival Edition When the sun sets on Sunday, Feb 9, the party kicks off at Morsa Loca! Keep the festival vibes going with Shoelace Shop bringing the tunes and our signature Spanish Tapas, craft beers, and killer cocktails fueling the night. Whether you're dancing, unwinding, or just chasing that last taste of summer, this is where you want to be. No cover, just good music, great drinks, and the best crowd in town. See you there! 🍸🎶🔥 Pilates at the Park with Faye Tohbyn Please bring: yoga mat, koha, and wear loose comfortable clothing 50 min in the open air. Pilates is a low-impact exercise that focuses on core, strength building, alignment, flexibility and mobility. Gentle exercise is a lovely way to start the day, to do so out in the fresh air adds another dimension to the experience. This mat session does not involve any pilates machines or equipment and is suitable for beginners. Faye Tohbyn is an experienced mat Pilates Instructor. Leveraging her training, Faye will guide you through a beginner’s mat pilates session. This is a great way to sample mat pilates, it may inspire you to consider joining other sessions run by Faye and to further embrace Pilates as an exercise form. If you miss this event, there are regular classes every Tuesday, 9:00am, at the Island Bay Community Centre.
