About the event

Register for the swim

If you're looking for your next swimming challenge then the annual Tapu Te Ranga Island swim may be just the ticket. Take a ride in a Surf Lifesaving IRB out to the Island and swim back as fast as you can.

The swim is open to age 8 and over - all swimmers under 12 must swim with a paying adult. You can donate $15 to have a member of the Lyall Bay Surf Life Saving Club swim with your child.

Pick one of two categories to enter: (Check the course map here)

  • Give it a Go - Open to all ages. A Swim from Tapu Te Ranga Island to Island Bay Beach.
  • There & Back - Open to 12 years and over - swimmers must be confident, swim for a club or be members of a Surf Life Saving Club.

Numbers will be limited so make sure you register. If you’re competing, please make sure you’re on the beach by 8:15am. While wetsuits aren't compulsory, they are recommended.

8:00am Registration

Registration will take place at the beach near the jetty. A registration form needs to be completed, signed and submitted online or at the beach on the day before the swim – if you don’t do it online then we suggest you download the form/fill it in and bring it with you to save time. You’ll also need to make a cash payment on the day - $15 per swimmer. Competitor numbers will be issued at that time.

8:30am Safety Briefing – Give it a Go

8:45am Safety Briefing – There & Back

The Safety briefings will be performed by Lyall Bay Surf Club.

8:40am Give it a Go

Give it a Go swimmers will move down to the water where they’ll be ferried over to the Island by an inflatable rescue boat in groups of five. Swimmers will be dropped off in the water, a couple of meters from shore (to avoid the rocks), and then make their way onto the Island. A swim marshal will be on the Island to direct them to the start line.

9:00am Give it a Go Swim starts

After all swimmers have been ferried to Tapu Te Ranga Island the swimmers complete the swim to Island Bay shore. They’ll be given a laminated place number (by a marshal) and directed to the recording table, where their place number (and possibly their finish time) will be noted.

Swimmers MUST sign off at the recording table, even if they don’t finish the swim. It’s as much about ensuring your safe-and-sound as anything.

9:30am There & Back Swim starts

Swimmers start on the shore line in the middle of the bay. As swimmers complete the swim out and around the buoy and back to Island Bay shore, they’ll be given a laminated place number (by a marshal) and directed to the recording table, where their place number (and possibly their finish time) will be noted.

Swimmers MUST sign off at the recording table, even if they don’t finish the swim. It’s as much about ensuring your safe-and-sound as anything.

 After the swim

Refreshments will be available near the finish line for all participants. Once all swimmers have completed the swim, spot prizes will be presented, plus lots of goodies. If you'd like more information about the swim, email admin@lyallbayslsc.org.nz
